Program Summary

A Matter of Balance is the most widely implemented fall prevention program across the country. An evidence-based, field-tested program, A Matter of Balance has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the fear of falling and increasing activity levels among older adults. It is an easy to implement, inexpensive, and well-accepted turnkey educational program that can be employed within many community organizations and groups.

Program Benefits

The program enables participants gain confidence by learning to:

  • View falls as controllable
  • Set goals for increasing activity levels
  • Make changes to reduce fall risk at home
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

Target Audience

The program is designed to benefit older adults who:

  • Are concerned about falls
  • Have sustained falls in the past
  • Restrict activities because of concerns about falling
  • Are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength
  • Are age 60 or older, community-dwelling and able to problem solve

Program Length

8 two-hour sessions

Program Cost

The A Matter of Balance lay leader model allows trained, layperson coaches to lead the classes. You can be trained as a Master Coach or Lay Leader.
